Occupying Ballroom 20, the “Supernatural” panel at San Diego Comic Con this year continues the tradition as one of the most entertaining and funny panels. Packed to the brim, the panel brought in lead stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki who missed last year’s Con to catch up with the filming.
Like usual, the audience were given a feature video first which is about Bobby Singer and the demon slash angel Crowley. Bobby wants his soul back from the demon but Crowley tells him to read the contract carefully where it was specified that he would “use best effort”, meaning he wants to but can’t. That is before Crowley realizes that he’s trapped inside a symbol circle drawn on Bobby’s floor.
The cast then entered the stage and immediately gave away what to expect from season 6. “We’re getting back to the basics, to what we all fell in love with in the beginning,” Ackles said. Producer Sera Gamble went for the specifics, saying “There are more monsters this season. The last couple seasons has been a lot of apocalypse stories, we got epic, then we were like ‘we really wanna shoot some monsters in the face’, so we’re [doing that] and for the first time our myhtology loops monsters in.”
There will be an episode which will be directed by Ackles. Speaking of the experience, the actor said, “It was a lot different than I’m used to. As an actor I’ve been approaching these scripts and only having to make creative decisions on one character, but as a director you have to do that for every word on every page. It was very cool.”
Padalecki admitted that he is still in the dark as to how he would get out of Hell. “I’d love to know too. I have absolutely no idea. That’s my answer,” he said, adding that it would be a question for the producers. Jim Beaver also talked about his character, saying “The way this works, Hell will probably freeze over before Bobby gets a girlfriend. Bobby and Crowley are gonna have their confrontation. I can pretty much assure you that the kissing days between Bobby and Crowley are over.”
Meanwhile, Robert Englund, who usually plays intimidating and scary roles, will actually be featured in a “fairy” episode. “We have to be very careful – little people will be involved,” he revealed. “I’ll be on pins and needles until we get our defamation suit out of the way. I see a moment where perhaps the boys have to fight a tiny pinprick of light that is ultimately Tinkerbell.”
Gamble confirmed that there will be more female elements in the new season. Sam and Dean’s relative from their mother side, a Campbell, will appear and also Cindy Sampson’s Lisa Braeden. As for whether the boys’ dad, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, would ever re-appear, Gamble said, “Have you seen that guy’s schedules? We love him, we love the character, we’re wide open. Of course we are, we’re not stupid! But he’s a very busy man.”
The last hint of season 6 brought out to the table is that of Dean. “We pick up a year later. He’s domesticated, living a somewhat normal life. It’ll be how he gets pulled back into this situation and dealing with the past,” Ackles spilled. Before the panel ended, a gag reel of season 5 which is included in the DVD/BluRay version was played.

They were filming the season premiere, and from what I could tell, Sam was himself and for some reason driving a Charger.. and has some kind of emotional goodbye/send off with Dean outside of Lisa’s house. There was also a red Challenger parked down the street that they were using. and Azazel is back, presumably NOT in a flashback but I could be wrong.
In a new interview with EW’s Michael Ausiello, former Supernatural showrunner Eric Kripke talked about why he stepped down, what his role will be for season 6 and what new showrunner Sera Gamble has in store. I urge you to check out the full interview HERE because it’s full of spine-tingling greatness.
For me, here are the three major revelations.
- Kripke is still involved, though he only plans on writing one episode this season and directing one. That should be exciting since he’s only directed two episodes in the show’s history, the last one being the season 4 finale.
- Monster origins will be a big story of this season. I’m kind of excited at the possibilities of exploring where monsters like wendigos, werewolves and vampires come from. It feels like a completely different kind of story that can go down some very interesting paths.
- The Campbell family origins should be an exciting story as well. Kripke’s comment in the interview about Campbells killing vampires on the Mayflower is pretty awesome and shows that, whatever the story is behind all these monsters, the Campbells were probably there.
This interview is probably the single most-clarifying explanation of what to expect from Supernatural season 6 and while it’s a little bit different, I’m excited to see how the writers handle the monsters, the family tree and the angels that are still around. In many ways, I think season 6 is going to be exactly the same and completely different at the same time.
Eric Kripke is no longer the man in charge of Supernatural.
The show’s creator has given himself a demotion, but is still privy to plenty of show spoilers and secrets. In an interview with EW.com, he opens up about season six, while also explaining his reason for stepping down…
On his reduced role: I knew that we were closing this chapter and opening a new one. It felt like it was the right time to take a step back and focus on new projects, but still keep my grubby little mitts in the show… I really think after five years of all of my crap, to have someone who has a fresh perspective and a fresh energy on these characters and this universe is healthy for the show.
Should the show have ended after last season?
The question is not should it have ended, the question is, Is the new story line compelling and interesting and is it an arena of this universe that we haven’t explored yet and is it putting Sam and Dean into new situations that we haven’t seen before? I think it does all of the above.
On season six spoilers: The great undiscovered country of Supernatural is kind of right in front of our face: creatures and monsters. We have had so many creature episodes but we haven’t actually explained where they came from – [similar] to the way we have explored angels and demons.
How do they feel about the situations they are in? Are they from here? Where did the first ones come from? How did werewolves and vampires and shape-shifters all begin anyway?

The “Supernatural” panel at the San Diego Comic Con International this year has just gone a notch more interesting. The horror series’ two leading men are confirmed attending the panel which is scheduled to take place on the last day of the convention, Sunday, July 25 at Ballroom 20 starting 11:15 A.M.
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles missed the biggest event for fanboys last year because they were catching up with the shooting schedule in Vancouver. In this summer 2010, both will spare time for the audience along with co-stars Misha Collins and Jim Beaver, as well as executive producers Eric Kripke, Ben Edlund, and new showrunner Sera Gamble.
According to the description from the official Comic Con site, the panel which will go one-hour long includes an exclusive sneak peek at footage from the highly anticipated sixth season, a Q & A session and a screening of the special features from the upcoming Supernatural: The Complete Fifth Season DVD and Blu-ray release.
Little is known about the sixth season because production was only kicked off recently in Vancouver. But it’s known that Ackles will make his directorial debut in the fourth episode. Meanwhile, “Exile on Main Street” which is the first return episode, will air Friday, September 24.

Fans at a Supernatural convention in New Jersey got a big surprise this weekend when one of the guests announced that he’ll be returning to the show for the season 6 premiere.
Frederic Lehne announced that he’s heading to the set starting this week to reprise his role as Supernatural’s original bad guy, Azazel, aka the Yellow-Eyed Demon. Dean killed the YED with the Colt at the end of season 2 with an assist from the ghost of John Winchester. Azazel made additional appearances later in flashbacks or time travel episodes when we saw him possess Sam and Dean’s grandpa as well as a priest.
Combined with the news that Mitch Pileggi is returning for multiple episodes, this raises some serious questions about what the heck is going on in Supernatural season 6. It sounds like they’re reopening all of the original mythology, possibly offering a more detailed explanation about Azazel’s master plan to free Lilith and open Lucifer’s cage. We could also learn more about the special children who were so crucial to season 2.
Whatever the reason, I’m getting very excited about season 6. Instead of starting over, it looks like new showrunner Sera Gamble is going to be using a lot of the existing mythology and I can’t wait to see how Azazel returns.
The sixth season will premiere Friday, September 24 at 9pm.
